Introduction
The world is full of hidden beauty waiting to be discovered, and photography has the remarkable ability to unveil these treasures. On November 4th, 2023, I had the privilege of being selected as a judge for the Georgetown Photowalk and Photography Competition, an event that celebrates the art of capturing beauty through a camera lens. Alongside me were two remarkable judges, Ms. Caroline Mireault of The High Commission of Canada and Ms. Candice Shades of The High Commission for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, each with a deep appreciation for photography and a keen eye for creativity.
The Theme: "Finding beauty in everything, through a camera lens"
The theme of the competition was a poetic invitation to explore the world through a different lens. It encouraged participants to seek out the extraordinary in the ordinary, and the magic in the mundane. This theme set the stage for a day of awe-inspiring photography.
The Photowalk Journey:
Our journey commenced at the enchanting Herdmanston Lodge, a perfect place to ignite the creative spark within all participants. From there, we ventured into three distinct locations, each offering its own unique photographic opportunities:
The Botanical Gardens/ Zoo:
The Kingstown Seawalls:
The tranquil rhythm of the ocean waves and the scenic beauty of the seawalls were a canvas for photographers to capture the serenity of coastal life.
Main/ Church Streets:
The bustling streets of Georgetown were a contrast to the previous locations, yet they offered urban photographers a chance to find beauty in the daily life of the city.
The Role of a Judge:
As a judge, our responsibilities were to evaluate each entry based on the theme and a set of criteria. We were tasked with the challenging, yet rewarding, duty of selecting the most compelling and thought-provoking photographs from a pool of incredibly talented participants.
The Georgetown Photowalk and Photography Competition Experience:
The event was a journey filled with surprises and moments of pure inspiration. I was struck by the creativity, passion, and unique perspectives of the participants. The images they captured showcased a diverse array of beauty, from the intricate details of a flower petal to the emotion etched into the face of a street musician.
